I made one thing clear.
“I don’t want my sons to lose their father.”
Rebecca nodded.
“I understand.”
I continued.
“But I won’t allow him to use them as weapons.”
She looked at me.
“Then we’ll focus on what protects them.”
One afternoon, Oliver came into my room.
He was holding a school project.
“Mom?”
I looked up.
“Yes?”
He hesitated.
“Dad says you’re trying to take his company.”
My chest tightened.
I put down my book.
“Come sit with me.”
He climbed onto the bed.
I took his hand.
“Your father and I disagree about some business matters.”
He frowned.
“Did you steal it?”
I felt tears rise.
“No, sweetheart.”
He looked at me.
I continued.
“I helped start the company.”
His eyes widened.
“You did?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
He stared.
“But Dad said he built it.”
I nodded.
“He worked hard too.”
Oliver looked confused.
I continued.
“Sometimes two people build something together.”
