My best friend of 37 years suddenly asked me to take one LAST photo together during our beach trip. When I asked why she said “last,” she gave me an unsettling smile and whispered, “Because tomorrow, you’re going to find out who I really am… and you may never want to see me again.”

Behind us, I heard Lorna say, very quietly, “Well, I’m going to need to delete a Facebook post.”

Afterward, I went to each of them. Lorna. Theresa. Bethany. The church friend who’d written the post. I told them the truth, every bit of it, and asked them to tell anyone they’d told before. Bethany cried and hugged Paige for a long time. The post came down that night.

When most of the guests had gone, my mother found me on the back steps.

She sat down beside me slowly, the way older women do, one hand on the railing.

“Your father loved you more than anything on this earth,” she said. “He made one terrible mistake. And he spent the rest of his life trying to be a good man because of it. He never stopped paying Joyce’s rent. Not once, not until the day he died. Did you know that?”
