Across the yard, Bethany, Russell’s sister, set her cup down slowly. “Wait. Then the secret meetings with Russ —”
“He found it,” Paige said quietly from the fence. Every head turned toward her. “On Mer’s DNA account. A year before he died. He called me. He said, ‘You have to tell her.’ I said I couldn’t. Helen had asked me not to. I was so scared she’d look at me and see the woman who wrecked her parents’ marriage.” Her voice broke. “So every Thursday, he met me at that diner and tried to talk me into it. And every Thursday, I said next week. And then he was gone, and I’d promised him I’d do it at the beach.” She looked at me. “That’s why it was our last photo as best friends, Mer. Because I hoped the next one would be as sisters.”
Nobody in that yard moved.
