I almost didn’t go.
When I walked through the back gate at two o’clock, every conversation in the yard stopped. Lorna and Theresa were there. So was Russell’s sister, Bethany. They all looked at me with the careful, worried faces people use for widows.
Paige was there too.
She was standing alone by the fence near the old swing set, holding a paper cup of punch. Nobody was talking to her. A few people were very obviously not talking to her.
My mother saw me and froze in the middle of cutting the cake.
“Meredith.”
I walked straight across the yard, past the cousins and the quilting ladies, and stopped in front of my mother. I held up Russell’s laptop, still open to the gold box.
Paige Calder. Half sibling.
My mother looked at the screen. The knife slid out of her hand and landed in the grass.
“Mom,” I said. “How long have you known?”
