My 8-Year-Old Son Skipped Lunch to Buy a Little Girl a Red Dress—Then 50 Lunchboxes Appeared on Our Lawn

Whenever he earned money, he kept the bills in an old pencil case beneath his bed.

He became remarkably focused on saving.

I assumed he wanted a toy.

Children his age often had something special in mind when they suddenly became interested in earning a few extra dollars.

Perhaps he’d seen something in a store.

Perhaps he was saving for a game.

Whatever it was, I thought it was good that he was learning the value of effort and patience.

At least, that’s what I believed.

Then one afternoon, I discovered what he was doing with his lunch money.

The Cafeteria Receipt That Made Me Suspicious
I found three crumpled bills on Noah’s dresser.

Beside them was a school cafeteria receipt from several days earlier.

Something about it caught my attention.

I’d been giving Noah money for lunch.

But the bills suggested he hadn’t been spending all of it.

That evening, I waited until he finished his homework.

Then I asked a simple question.

« Noah, what did you eat for lunch today? »

He kept looking at his homework.

« School food. »

« What kind? »

Silence.
