MY 18-YEAR-OLD SON HAD MOVED IN WITH HIS BEST FRIEND

I had watched him grow up as closely as I’d watched my own son.

And I hadn’t seen this.

I turned to Dale. He was standing behind us with his hands hanging at his sides.

“Neither of us is a match,” he said. “Not even close. The doctors said a sibling would have the best chance. And I knew Wyatt was his brother. I’m the only one who knew for sure.” His voice broke. “So after the graduation sleepover, I took the toothbrush. I sent it in myself. Renata didn’t know until the results came.”

“And Ezra?”

“Ezra found the report on my desk.” Dale’s face twisted. “I have never seen my son that angry. He said I’d stolen something from Wyatt that wasn’t mine to take. He said Wyatt deserved to know he had a brother before anybody asked him for anything. That’s why he told him after graduation. Not because of the kidney. Because of the lie.”
