MY 18-YEAR-OLD SON HAD MOVED IN WITH HIS BEST FRIEND

Wyatt looked down at the paper. At the name printed on it. His jaw worked.

“That’s why we look alike,” he said quietly. “Me and Ezra.”

“You’re half brothers.”

He let out a long, shaky breath. Then he shook his head.

“Mom, that’s not even the part that scares me.”

The hair on my arms rose.

“Ezra told me after graduation that he thought we were brothers. He said he’d found something. He was really upset, but he wouldn’t tell me what. Then right away he started pushing the apartment. ‘Let’s get a place. Let’s do it now.’ I thought — I don’t know. I thought if I lived with him, I could figure out if he was messing with me.”

“And?”

“Saturday night, our first night there, I got up for water. Ezra was on the phone in his room. He was talking to his dad. I heard him say, ‘He’d do it if I asked him. He trusts me.'” Wyatt swallowed. “Then he shut the door and I couldn’t hear the rest.”
