My 13-year-old son sold his beloved guitar to buy a new wheelchair for a girl in his class

Exactly the kind of nonsense Thomas would have loved.

For the first time since his death, learning a secret about him had stopped feeling entirely like betrayal.

Some secrets came from fear.

Some from shame.

Some from promises made to other people.

That did not make secrecy painless.

But it made Thomas human again.

Not the perfect father grief had turned him into.

Just Thomas.

A loving, complicated man who had left some things unfinished.

In January, Officer Daniels called.

“We identified R.C.”

I stood at the kitchen window, watching snow drift against the glass.

“Who?”

“Rachel Cole. Mobility Bridge’s former finance manager.”

“Where is she?”

“Still here in town.”

“Does she know you’re investigating?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“She contacted us voluntarily.”

That surprised me.

“What did she say?”

“That she moved money.”

My heart beat faster.

“For Victor Lane?”

“She says Lane directed the transactions.”

“So that’s it?”
