My 13-year-old son sold his beloved guitar to buy a new wheelchair for a girl in his class

Elena frowned.

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“He actually objected.”

That surprised me.

“Why?”

“He wanted me to use a different organization.”

“Why?”

“He said he didn’t trust their paperwork.”

Lucas spoke from beside Julian.

“Mom thought he was being paranoid.”

Elena gave him a look.

“I thought he was being overly cautious.”

“You said paranoid.”

“I was simplifying.”

“You were complaining.”

“Lucas.”

He grinned.

For an instant, I saw Thomas again.

Elena continued.

“The chair arrived. It was excellent. Nothing went wrong. Eventually I assumed Thomas had been mistaken.”

“Then why does Lucas’s grant number appear on Maya’s paperwork?”

“I have no idea.”

Lucas had been listening closely.

“Can I see it?”

I handed him the photocopy.

He studied it.

Then frowned.

“This isn’t my number.”

“What?”

“My chair had a sticker underneath the seat.”

Elena nodded.

“He remembers numbers.”

Lucas ignored her.

“It ended in 4197.”
