“But he saw Lucas.”
“Occasionally.”
Julian’s voice was quiet.
“Dad had a little brother.”
“Yes.”
“And he never told us.”
“Yes.”
“Did Lucas know about me?”
Martin hesitated.
“I think so.”
That hurt Julian.
I could see it.
Perhaps more than anything else that had happened.
Thomas had been gone three years, and Julian had spent much of that time assembling his father from memories.
Now there was an entire room in that house of memory whose door had been locked.
“Where is Lucas now?”
Martin sighed.
“His mother moved away after Tom died. I don’t know where.”
Officer Daniels was able to learn more than Martin.
Lucas and his mother, Elena Price, lived two counties away.
Police contacted her not because Lucas was suspected of anything, but because investigators needed to verify the grant records.
Elena agreed to speak with us.
Not with the police present.
With me.
