“Do we know him?”
“No.”
“Is he family?”
“I don’t know.”
There weren’t many Vances in our area.
Thomas had been an only child.
His father had died young, and his mother had passed away before Julian was born.
At least, that was the family history I knew.
Rebecca emailed the document.
The grant form was eighteen months old.
Recipient:
Lucas Vance. Age 11.
The address had been partly redacted in the file Thomas possessed.
The equipment listed was a lightweight pediatric wheelchair.
Funding source: Mobility Bridge Foundation.
The disturbing part was the grant identification number.
The same number later appeared on paperwork connected to Maya.
“So somebody reused the number,” Julian said.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“That is what Rebecca is trying to determine.”
But Julian was fixed on the surname.
“You really don’t know Lucas?”
“No.”
“Could Dad have?”
I wanted to say no.
Instead I said, “Maybe.”
