She appeared to be in her late forties and held a thick folder against her chest.
The school principal, Dr. Mercer, sat beside her.
Maya’s father approached us.
“Mrs. Vance?”
“Yes.”
He shook my hand, then turned to Julian.
For several seconds, he couldn’t seem to speak.
Finally he crouched so his eyes were level with my son’s.
“You bought that chair?”
Julian nodded.
Mr. Ortiz’s eyes glistened.
“You shouldn’t have had to.”
Julian glanced toward Maya.
“She shouldn’t have had to use the other one.”
Mr. Ortiz closed his eyes briefly.
Then he put a hand on Julian’s shoulder.
“Thank you.”
Nothing about it felt theatrical.
There was no applause.
No crowd.
Just one exhausted father thanking a boy who had noticed something adults had failed to solve.
The woman with the folder stood.
“My name is Rebecca Sloan.”
She looked at Julian.
