Part One: The Stranger at My Door
“Yesterday, your daughter uncovered a lie.”
The man standing on my porch spoke so quietly that I almost didn’t hear him.
For several seconds, I could only stare.
Six polished black cars were parked along our narrow street, looking completely out of place beside the aging houses and cracked sidewalks. A small crowd had gathered near the curb—older men in dark coats, elegantly dressed women, and several people carrying folders and briefcases.
My neighbors watched from behind half-closed curtains.
But none of that shocked me as much as the man standing directly outside my door.
The day before, he had been wearing a torn coat. His gray beard had been tangled, and exhaustion had hollowed out his face. Now his beard was trimmed, his hair was neat, and someone had dressed him in a clean navy suit.
Still, I recognized his weary eyes.
