Calling home.
Telling her family she would see them tomorrow.
She remembered leaving the cab briefly before settling down for the night.
Then Greg approached.
His story about a mechanical problem seemed believable.
They were both truckers.
Helping somebody stranded beside a rig was ordinary.
That normality was what made it work.
“I leaned under the hood,” Joan testified.
“And then?”
“Everything went black.”
When she woke, her wrists were restrained.
She was somewhere moving.
She could hear an engine.
But she could not see outside.
Later came the cabin.
The heavy door.
Boarded windows.
Forest.
Silence.
Greg told her nobody would find her.
