The judge stamped the documents with a firm, echoing thump and slid the final decree across the table.

I picked up the pen first. My signature was smooth, fluid, and unhurried.

When Ethan took the pen, his hand shook so violently that the black ink smeared slightly on the parchment. But he signed it.

It was over. Twelve years of shared life, reduced to two signatures and a legal stamp.

As we walked out of the courtroom, Ethan tried to stop me one last time near the heavy double doors.

“What will you do now, Amelia? Back to acting? Back to the city?”

“I’m going to plant my garden, Ethan,” I said, offering him a small, genuine smile. “I’m going to enjoy the quiet.”

“And if you get lonely?”

I paused, looking at this man who had once been my entire universe.

“I was lonelier sitting next to you in that Maybach than I will ever be alone at Blue Ridge.”
A Life Reclaimed

Six months later.

The morning sun broke over the mountains of Blue Ridge, casting a warm gold light over my small, rustic cottage.

The garden had flourished. Rows of dark, rich green basil leaves filled the air with a sweet, earthy scent. The tomato vines were heavy with ripe red fruit, and wild yellow sunflowers swayed gently in the breeze near the wooden fence.
