CHAPTER 6: THE SHADOW IN THE WEST WING
`02:18:44 EST.`
The subterranean corridors beneath the Supreme Court of the United States do not resemble the quiet, marble-clad galleries where tourist groups shuffle beneath the frescoed ceilings above.
Sixty feet beneath the Great Hall, past the private chambers and the rare book archival stacks, lies Sub-Level Three // The High Judicial Continuity Crypt.
The walls are not white Vermont limestone; they are four-foot-thick blocks of native Virginia greenstone and reinforced blast-concrete, lined with high-voltage copper busbars and industrial air conduits humming in a continuous, sixty-cycle subterranean thrum: *whirrr-clank… whirrr-clank.*
Inside the monolithic, four-inch-thick steel blast doors of the West Conference Room…
Bathed in forty thousand lumens of clinical, blinding white halogen light…
Sat fourteen men around an oval conference table carved from an unbroken slab of black composite granite:
Sitting at the head of the table, wearing his black judicial silk robes over an immaculate, bespoke three-piece suit of midnight-blue English flannel, his silver hair brushed back from an imperial, un-wrinkled brow, was **Chief Justice Arthur Sterling-Vance**.
He was seventy-six years old.
He sat six feet three inches tall, his broad frame filling the high-backed leather executive chair, his face carved into that terrifying, patrician mask of unyielding supremacy that had confirmed eighty federal judges and shaped four decades of constitutional law.
Standing beside him, looking radiant and completely composed in a tailored cream wool Chanel traveling suit, her diamond earrings catching the halogen light…
Was **Camila Sterling**.
My fiancée.
On the table between Arthur and Camila rested Nicholas’s leather-bound design journals, an unsealed four-hundred-page Swiss banking brief, and an antique gold Montblanc fountain pen suspended half an inch above the signature line of the master conveyance deed:
`IN THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES // OCTOBER TERM, 2026`
`EXTRAORDINARY WRIT OF MANDAMUS: CONDUIT TEN (ATLANTIC COMMAND SPUR)`
`AUTHORIZATION: IMMEDIATE CONVEYANCE OF ALL SUBTERRANEAN DEFENSE RESERVES`
`TO THE VALKYRIE OVERSEAS FIDUCIARY TRUST // VADUZ & ZURICH.`
`RECORDER: CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR M. STERLING-VANCE`
`CONSIDERATION: $60,000,000,000.00 USD (SOVEREIGN MEZZANINE RELIEF)`
“Sign the mandamus, Grandfather,” Camila murmured softly, her fingers gently smoothing the lapel of her Chanel jacket:
“The team in Bridgeport confirmed forty minutes ago. The house on Maple Street was engaged. The housekeeper is dying in Stamford. Alex is completely neutralized, chasing ambulances like a bewildered husband.”
Camila smiled—a slow, razor-thin, terrifying line of white porcelain that showed her straight, expensive teeth:
“Nicholas was clever, Grandfather. He thought he could hide the child in an industrial ghetto with an uneducated cleaning woman.”
“He forgot that an archivist’s bloodline… always leaves a paper trail for those who know how to read the registries.”
Chief Justice Arthur Vance did not sign immediately.
He dipped the gold nib of his fountain pen toward the heavy vellum, his voice echoing off the acoustic baffles of the vault in that deep, resonant velvet cello that had charmed forty congressional hearings:
“Arthur Vance Senior was an exceptional surveyor, gentlemen,” Arthur purred:
“He bored forty miles of subterranean granite with naval sweat, and he left the master deed to two grandsons who were too weak to command the Republic.”
“Nicholas died on the rocks at Montauk.”
“And Alex spent his life building parking garages and municipal piers, completely blind to the fact that my granddaughter was sleeping in his bed while we prepared to extract the strategic bedrock from beneath his family’s name.”
Arthur lowered the pen to the vellum:
“To the compliant cuckold in Connecticut, gentlemen.”
“May he weep in peace while we manage the Empire.”
*KABOOOOM.*
The four-inch-thick steel blast door of the West Conference Room did not slide open on its automated tracks.
It was cleaved off its structural bronze rollers by an eighty-pound linear hydraulic tactical breaching ram deployed by twelve operators from the **United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group (SOG)**:
*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*
A concussive shockwave of sub-zero winter air, pulverized concrete dust, and tactical propellant blew through the vault, shattering three overhead light fixtures into a blizzard of incandescent glass:
*SCREAMS-PANTING-TERROR.*
Through the billowing white clouds of pulverized greenstone…
Illuminating the room in forty thousand lumens of blinding, clinical tactical halogen…
Rushed the twelve SOG operators.
Their suppressed carbines came up to compressed high-ready, the red laser dots dancing across the chests, throats, and foreheads of the fourteen executives, Swiss bankers, and associate jurists seated around the black granite table:
“FEDERAL INQUEST! REMAIN STATIONARY! HANDS FLAT ON THE TABLE SURFACES! DO NOT REACH FOR BRIEFING FOLDERS!”
Camila shrieked, backing violently into the corner, her five-inch designer heels catching on the concrete floorboards:
*“GRANDFATHER! DO SOMETHING! WHO ARE THESE MEN?!”*
Walking through the pulverized concrete…
Wearing his full service dress blue uniform bearing the four silver stars of the **Chief of Naval Operations**…
Came **Vice Admiral David Mercer**.
My uncle.
Beside him walked **Chief Judge Eleanor Mercer**, Presiding Judge of the Second Circuit, her gold-headed surveyor’s cane striking the stone with an authoritative, concussive *CLACK*.
And walking between them…
Wearing his grandfather’s twenty-ounce Scottish tweed hacking jacket, his hand-welted leather field boots crushing the shattered glass into the floorboards with a clean, concussive *crunch… tack… crunch*…
His bronze transit pin gleaming on his lapel…
Holding seven-year-old Matthew Nicholas Vance securely in his left arm…
Was Alex Vance.
Me.
