CHAPTER 8: THE BREACH AT CEDAR RIDGE
*KABOOOOM.*
The sky above Westlake Hills did not roar with the sound of approaching civilian air traffic.
It cleaved open.
At precisely one hundred feet above the cedar canopy, descending through the afternoon mist with the ear-splitting, one-hundred-and-forty-decibel fury of an active direct-action assault…
Came three **Sikorsky MH-60M Direct Action Penetrator (DAP) Black Hawks**, their non-reflective matte-black fuselages bearing no national insignia, their FLIR sensor turrets tracking the three luxury vehicles in the driveway with razor-sharp infrared precision:
*SCREEECH-ROAR-BOOOM.*
The rotor wash struck the portico like an eighty-knot hurricane, tearing the cedar branches from the arbor, overturning the wrought-iron chaise lounge, and blowing Evelyn’s cream St. John skirt flat against her ribs:
*CRASH-ROAR-SHATTER.*
From the skids of the two flanking helicopters, twelve operators from the **United States Marshals Service Special Operations Group (SOG)** and the **Army 75th Ranger Regiment Regimental Reconnaissance Company** dropped down heavy nylon fast-ropes with synchronized mechanical velocity:
*SLAM-SLAM-SLAM.*
They wore sterile dark-charcoal Nomex drysuits, Level IV boron-carbide plate carriers, and Ops-Core ballistic helmets fitted with panoramic night-vision brackets. Across their chests hung suppressed SIG Sauer MCX Rattlers, their weapon-mounted PEQ-15 infrared lasers cutting through the dust in twelve razor-sharp needles of incandescent crimson light:
“FEDERAL INQUEST! REMAIN STATIONARY! HANDS SPREAD FLAT ON THE WALL SURFACES! DO NOT REACH FOR PURSES OR COAT POCKETS!”
Donald Vance threw his bourbon glass onto the stone, diving beneath the shattered table with his hands locked over his head, screaming with hysterical, petrified terror:
*“DON’T SHOOT! I AM AN ATTORNEY AT LAW! THIS IS A PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL DISPUTE!”*
Arthur Sterling-Vance backed against the limestone balustrade, his gold-headed walking stick raised defensively, his velvet cello voice finally reduced to a shredded, high-pitched screech:
“HOLD YOUR FIRE! I AM THE CHIEF JUSTICE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS! YOU HAVE NO STATUTORY AUTHORITY TO ENTER THIS PROPERTY UNDER ARMS!”
“Stand down, Arthur,” a voice commanded from the breach.
Walking through the blowing cedar leaves…
His hand-welted naval leather bridge boots making a clean, concussive *crunch… tack… crunch* against the gravel…
Wearing an immaculate, double-breasted service bridge coat bearing the four silver stars of the **Chief of Naval Operations**…
Was **Vice Admiral David Mercer**.
Sarah’s uncle.
Maya’s great-uncle.
Beside him walked **United States Attorney Marcus Cooper**, Chief Federal Prosecutor for the Western District of Texas, holding an unsealed, four-hundred-page federal grand jury indictment stamped with the deep red wax seal of the **UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT**:
`CRIMINAL DOCKET: 2026-CR-00914-TREASON`
`THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA & THE MERCER SOVEREIGN DEFENSE ESTATE`
`v. CHIEF JUSTICE ARTHUR M. STERLING-VANCE,`
`EVELYN S. VANCE, AND DONALD M. VANCE.`
`CHARGES: EIGHTY-FOUR COUNTS OF CAPITAL HIGH TREASON UNDER ARTICLE THREE,`
`PREMEDITATED EXTORTION OF SOVEREIGN DEFENSE ESCROWS UNDER TITLE FORTY-TWO,`
`FABRICATION OF MUNICIPAL LAND CONDUIT AFFIDAVITS (18 U.S.C. § 1001),`
`AND DEPRAVED-HEART REPRODUCTIVE CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT CHILD STARVATION.`
`EXTRAORDINARY CAPIAS BENCH WARRANT: IMMEDIATE ARMED ATTACHMENT.`
Admiral Mercer stopped three feet from where Evelyn stood frozen against the stone wall.
He did not offer a family greeting.
He did not look at her diamonds.
He looked down at the sixty-two-year-old matriarch with forty years of North Atlantic command ice:
“Evelyn,” the Admiral said softly:
“In nineteen-eighty-four, my brother Arthur Mercer and your late husband surveyed this rock to protect the nuclear command continuity of this republic.”
The Admiral slammed his service portfolio onto the shattered table:
KABOOOOM.
“Under Section Fourteen-B of the **Mercer Founding Indenture of Nineteen-Forty-Four**…”
“ANY ASSET, ANY DIVERTED CONTRACT, AND ANY SEDITIOUS EQUITY FUNNELED THROUGH THE VANCE LINEAL HOLDING TRUST… REVERTS IN ABSOLUTE FEE SIMPLE UNTO THE SOLE SURVIVING DIRECT BIOLOGICAL HEIR OF SARAH MERCER-VANCE.”
“Unto Maya Eleanor Mercer-Vance.”
“The granddaughter you forced to eat soaked bread out of a paper cup.”
The Admiral bared his teeth in a cold, terrifying line of white bone:
“You didn’t steal one hundred and eighty-four thousand dollars from Jason’s checking account, Evelyn.”
“You spent five years pouring sixty billion dollars of Arthur’s personal offshore criminal reserves… straight into Maya’s sovereign spendthrift trust.”
“You spent four decades engineering a grand takeover…”
The Admiral pointed his scarred finger straight toward the F-350 parked in the driveway:
“…only to hand your entire dynastic empire to the child you tried to banish to an asylum in San Angelo.”
