Marcy runs it. She finally got to stop cleaning offices.
She clips the loudest at every little kid’s “show,” exactly the way she once clapped for me.
My art career is the kind of thing I don’t quite believe when I say it out loud. Shows, commissions, a life built entirely out of the one thing being unwanted taught me to do.
But the piece I’ll never sell hangs in the front room of the yellow house.
Three Bags.
Three plastic garbage bags, painted in gold light, because Marcy taught me you can grow bigger than the smallest thing anyone ever did to you — big enough, even, to turn it into something beautiful and hang it on your own wall.
My mother handed me away in those bags and told me to stay with Marcy “for a while.”
It turned into forever.
And forever, it turned out, was the greatest gift she ever accidentally gave me.
