The title alone stopped me.
Questions I Was Too Afraid to Ask Harry.
That evening I apologized.
Not perfectly.
But honestly.
When Samantha later asked whether I wanted to attend her next cardiology appointment, I finally understood.
She wasn’t asking for solutions.
She was asking whether I would stand beside her.
Three days later we sat together in Dr. Matthews’ office.
After explaining Samantha’s condition, the doctor looked at me.
Instead of asking about treatments, pregnancy, or alternatives, I asked one question.
“What does Samantha need from me?”
The doctor smiled gently.
“That’s something Samantha should answer.”
Samantha looked down before speaking.
“I need you to stop acting like the greatest tragedy is that we may never have children.”
Her words struck harder than anything else.
“I made your diagnosis about my loss,” I admitted.
“You’re allowed to grieve,” she said softly.
“But I can’t carry that grief for you.”
