⸻
By the end of August, I couldn’t wait to have her home. That Saturday, I drove to the resort to pick her up.
⸻
Callie texted me to wait outside the employee building. A few minutes later, the door opened. I saw her walking toward me. Then I noticed what she was carrying.
A newborn baby.
⸻
I got out of the car.
“Callie?”
She gave me a nervous little smile.
“Hi, Mom.”
⸻
I barely heard her. The baby couldn’t have been more than a few weeks old.
“Whose baby is that?”
⸻
Callie looked down at the tiny face.
“Can we get in the car first?”
⸻
“Where is her mother?”
⸻
She didn’t answer. Then I noticed a diaper bag hanging from Callie’s shoulder.
“Callie, what’s going on? Are we taking this baby somewhere?”
⸻
She shook her head.
“Then why are you holding her?”
⸻
Callie pulled the baby closer. I stared at her.
“Sweetheart, whose baby is this?”
