I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

I remembered arguments.

I remembered Jesse asking whether we could afford his school trip and me telling him we couldn’t.

I remembered telling him he needed to start helping around the house.

I had never thought those conversations would make him believe he was a burden.

“Did he say I didn’t love him?”

Danny shook his head.

“No. He said you loved him too much to let him go. He thought if he stayed, you’d keep sacrificing everything for him.”

I covered my face.

That was the note.

I’m sorry, Mom. I’ll only drag you down.

I had read those words hundreds of times.

But I had never understood how deeply he believed them.

Danny said he and Jesse spent several weeks moving between shelters and temporary places.

They became friends because neither of them trusted anyone else.

Jesse was older, but he treated Danny like a younger brother.

He shared food when he had it and helped Danny find places to stay.
