I LET A HOMELESS BOY SLEEP IN THE BACK ROOM OF A GAS STATION FOR TWO WINTERS. MY MANAGER FIRED ME AND CALLED ME A THIEF IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. SIX YEARS LATER, ON THE MORNING I WAS BEING EVICTED, THAT SAME BOY RETURNED—WEARING A FIRE DEPARTMENT UNIFORM AND CARRYING SOMETHING THAT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.

Inside were several photographs, a watch, and a folded sheet of paper.

I recognized Jesse’s handwriting immediately.

Mom,

If Danny ever brings Lily to you, please don’t be angry with him for waiting. He did more for me than I can ever explain.

He was my brother when I had no one.

Please take care of him if he needs you. And let him take care of you, too.

I love you.

I read it again and again.

Then I looked at Danny.

“He wrote this for me?”

Danny nodded.

“He wanted me to find you. He made me promise.”

I held the letter against my heart.

For eleven years, I had believed my son had disappeared because he didn’t want me anymore.

Now I knew he had carried me with him everywhere.

He had talked about my pancakes.

He had kept my photograph.

He had written letters.

He had wanted to come home.
