I GAVE BIRTH ON A PLANE AT 35,000 FEET, AND A STRANGER HELPED DELIVER MY BABY — BUT AS WE PREPARED TO LAND, THE CAPTAIN ANNOUNCED, “THERE’S SOMETHING IMPORTANT THE MOTHER NEEDS TO KNOW BEFORE WE OPEN THE DOORS.”

I thought he was just relieved. I didn’t know then that a man could wait thirty-one years for a moment.

For the next half hour, all I could think about was her. Tiny. Furious. Breathing. Joaquin stayed beside us, checking her color, rubbing her feet, wrapping her in a SkyVista Air fleece blanket.

Then, as we began our descent, the captain’s voice came over the speakers.

At first it sounded routine. Seat belts. Tray tables.

Then his voice changed.

“Ladies and gentlemen, there’s something important the mother needs to know before we open the doors.”

Every head on that plane turned toward me.

And across the aisle, the man who had just delivered my baby closed his eyes, like he’d been waiting for this moment his whole life.

CHAPTER 2: THE DOORS
“Mrs. Dawson,” the captain went on, his voice careful now, “first, congratulations. Paramedics and a neonatal team are standing by at the gate. They’ll board first and take care of you and your daughter.”
