I GAVE BIRTH ON A PLANE AT 35,000 FEET, AND A STRANGER HELPED DELIVER MY BABY — BUT AS WE PREPARED TO LAND, THE CAPTAIN ANNOUNCED, “THERE’S SOMETHING IMPORTANT THE MOTHER NEEDS TO KNOW BEFORE WE OPEN THE DOORS.”

“I called 911. The roads were a nightmare. The ambulance took forty minutes to reach us. There were two paramedics. An older guy driving, and a young one in the back with your mother. Twenty-four years old. Barely out of training.” My father swallowed. “That was Joaquin.”

My breath caught.

“We were halfway to the hospital when you came. Right there on the highway, in the back of that ambulance, in the snow. That boy delivered you with his bare hands under one little dome light. He cleared your mouth. Rubbed your back till you screamed. Put you on your mother’s chest.”

My father’s voice broke.

“And then your mother started bleeding again. Much worse. And there was nothing that boy could do. Not in an ambulance. Not on that road. He tried. God, he tried. He worked on her the whole way. I watched him do everything a man could do.”
