I GAVE BIRTH ON A PLANE AT 35,000 FEET, AND A STRANGER HELPED DELIVER MY BABY — BUT AS WE PREPARED TO LAND, THE CAPTAIN ANNOUNCED, “THERE’S SOMETHING IMPORTANT THE MOTHER NEEDS TO KNOW BEFORE WE OPEN THE DOORS.”

“Then report that he’s a hero.”

Joaquin touched my shoulder gently.

“Callie. It’s all right.” He looked down at my daughter in the incubator, her tiny fist waving. “Take care of her.”

Then he did something strange. He looked at my face for a long moment, the same searching look he’d given me when I told him my birthday.

“You have your mother’s eyes,” he said quietly.

Before I could ask him what he meant, the officers led him up the jet bridge and out of sight.

CHAPTER 3: THE VIDEO
In the ambulance from the airport, Kendra the flight attendant rode with me. She’d asked her supervisor for permission and hadn’t waited for an answer.

“I’ve been flying eighteen years,” she said, holding my hand while the paramedic checked my blood pressure. “I’ve seen two births on planes. Neither one went like that.”

“He was amazing.”

“He was.” She hesitated. “Can I tell you something strange, though? When he first came up the aisle, before he’d even looked at you, he asked me where we were diverting to. And whether the hospital had a NICU. He asked me three times. And when I said yes, he closed his eyes and said something under his breath.”
