I still have the first photograph Tasha took of Maya’s hands.
Danielle keeps it with the court documents.
We do not show Maya.
Maybe someday, if she asks.
For now, she deserves childhood.
But I look at that photograph once every year.
Not to punish myself.
Not anymore.
I look at it because I never want comfort to make me careless again.
I used to believe being a good husband meant providing.
Paying bills.
Working hard.
Taking trips I hated because they came with promotions.
Making sure my family had a nice apartment.
I was wrong.
Providing without paying attention is not enough.
Love requires attention.
Attention to silence.
Attention to changes.
Attention to the answers people give when the controlling person is not in the room.
Especially then.
