PART 11
Loretta took a plea deal before the final week of trial.
The evidence was overwhelming.
She pleaded guilty to reduced charges involving child abuse.
Financial exploitation.
Identity theft.
And attempted fraud.
She received prison time.
Not decades.
But enough.
The judge also imposed a long-term protective order.
Loretta was prohibited from contacting Danielle.
Maya.
Or me.
When the judge asked whether she wanted to speak, Loretta stood.
She turned toward me.
“I made mistakes.”
Her voice shook.
“But everything I did was because I loved my son.”
I felt Danielle stiffen beside me.
The judge interrupted.
“Mrs. Bennett.”
“Love is not a legal defense to abuse.”
Loretta looked down.
Then she said something quieter.
“I didn’t want to lose him.”
For the first time, I believed her.
That was the tragedy.
She had been so terrified of losing control over me that she destroyed the relationship entirely.
After sentencing, Terrence stood beside me outside the courthouse.
He looked toward the street.
“How do you feel?”
“I don’t know.”
“Yeah.”
We stood in silence.
Then he hugged me.
I had not hugged my brother in years.
That hurt almost as much as everything else.
