PART 7
The next morning, I took Skylar to school.
She did not want to go.
I understood.
But I also wanted her somewhere safe.
The principal knew something was happening.
I explained enough.
No details.
Only that nobody except me could pick her up.
Especially Brandon.
The principal wrote it down.
Then asked,
“Do you want security notified?”
“Yes.”
I hated saying it.
But yes.
Then I drove to Rachel’s office.
She already had two people waiting.
A forensic accountant named Peter Hale.
And a former banking compliance officer named Nina Vasquez.
Rachel had moved quickly.
Peter opened the financing documents.
Then smiled without humor.
“This is sloppy.”
I blinked.
“Six hundred thousand dollars feels less sloppy to me.”
He nodded.
“The amount is serious.”
“The paperwork isn’t.”
He pointed to the appraisal.
“Look at the valuation date.”
I did.
Three weeks earlier.
“I never had an appraiser.”
“Exactly.”
Then he showed me the appraiser’s name.
Mason Ridge Valuations.
No phone number.
No license number.
No signed report.
Likely fake.
Then Nina found something worse.
The financing company had already run my credit.
Twice.
Without my permission.
