My name was already signed.
The signature looked close.
Very close.
But not mine.
I knew immediately.
My C always curled inward.
This one opened outward.
The fake was good.
Not perfect.
Underneath was another signature.
Brandon Reynolds.
Marked as:
Authorized Spousal Representative.
No such authority existed.
I scrolled farther.
There was a power of attorney.
Purportedly signed by me.
Giving Brandon broad authority over “property renovation, financing, and household asset restructuring.”
My hands went cold.
I had never signed it.
Then I saw the witness.
Gertrude Reynolds.
And the notary.
Hailey Reynolds.
I stared at the screen.
Hailey.
My unemployed sister-in-law.
The woman sleeping in my guest room.
The woman filming king crab for social media using food bought on my card.
Apparently, she had become a notary six months earlier.
I remembered her mentioning an online certification.
I had not cared.
Now I understood.
