I came home from deployment three weeks early to surprise my husband and our four-year-old daughter. Instead, I found my house trashed, my little girl alone and starving, and my husband partying on a Caribbean cruise…007

`”And as for that brat on the couch…?”`

Patricia’s laugh chimed through the speaker like thin ice breaking over a stagnant pond:

`”Lily was left with adequate non-perishable crackers. If she couldn’t reach the counter, that was a failure of her maternal training.”`

`”At zero-two-hundred hours tomorrow morning, the transfer clears the Swiss banking syndicate in Bern.”`

`”Sixty billion dollars in sovereign carried equity.”`

`”You will take a one-hundred-thousand-dollar divorce settlement, you will surrender all custody of Lily to Derek under the military instability doctrine, and you will spend the rest of your career inspecting supply tents in Kansas.”`

`”Do you understand your place now, Hannah?”`

I did not scream.

I did not curse.

I walked to the kitchen island, picked up the microphone, and brought it to my lips.

My voice was forty decibels of compressed polar diamond:

“Patricia,” Major Hannah Nolan said softly:

“Look out the starboard window of your stateroom.”

CHAPTER 5: THE INTERCEPTION AT MONA PASSAGE

On the speaker, there was a sudden, violent pause:

`PATRICIA: “What… what did you say?”`

“I said look out the window, Patricia.”

Through the satellite link came the unmistakable, concussive roar of twin Pratt & Whitney F119-PW-100 turbofan engines screaming across the ocean surface at Mach 1.8:

*SCREEECH-BOOOM.*

A dual sonic boom tore through the cruise ship’s luxury staterooms, shattering the exterior glass balconies on the eleventh deck and sending glasses of Dom Pérignon smashing across the teak sun decks:

`AUDIO INTERCEPT // CELESTIAL MAJESTY BRIDGE LOOP:`
`CAPTAIN: “MAYDAY! MAYDAY! THIS IS CRUISE VESSEL CELESTIAL MAJESTY! WE ARE UNDER CLOSE AIR INTERCEPT BY TWO UNMARKED F-TWENTY-TWO RAPTORS!”`
`TACTICAL TRANSMISSION: “M/S CELESTIAL MAJESTY, THIS IS UNITED STATES NAVY STRIKE GROUP TEN. YOU ARE IN VIOLATION OF TITLE FIFTY MARITIME INTERDICTION ORDERS. HEAVE TO IMMEDIATELY. PREPARE TO BE BOARDED BY ARMED NAVAL DETACHMENTS.”`

Through the phone, Derek’s scream was pure, unadulterated terror:

`DEREK: “MOM! THE SKY IS FULL OF WARSHIPS! THERE’S A DESTROYER CUTTING ACROSS OUR BOW!”`

`PATRICIA: “CALL ARTHUR! CALL THE SUPREME COURT! THEY CAN’T BOARD A PANAMANIAN FLAGGED CRUISE SHIP!”`

`TACTICAL TRANSMISSION: “VESSEL HAS BEEN REQUISITIONED UNDER THE ARTICLES OF WAR (1944). PREPARE TO RECEIVE THE FAST-ROPES.”`

*BANG. CRASH. ROAR.*

The sound of twelve flashbang grenades detonating on the private veranda outside Derek’s luxury suite tore through the phone, followed by the concussive, synchronized bark of twelve suppressed automatic rifles:

`”FEDERAL INQUEST! DOWN ON THE DECK! SPREAD YOUR HANDS! DO NOT REACH FOR SATELLITE TERMINALS!”`

`”I AM PATRICIA VANCE! YOU CAN’T TOUCH ME—”`

*SLAM.*

The sound of Patricia Vance’s face striking the teak deckboards was followed by the sharp, definitive *SNAP* of heavy-duty stainless-steel transport irons ratcheting around her wrists:

*SNAP-SNAP.*

Beside her, Derek was weeping, gagging on ocean spray as he was pinned to the deck by two two-hundred-and-forty-pound Navy SEAL operators from DEVGRU:

`”HANNAH! PLEASE! I WAS ONLY FOLLOWING MOM’S ORDERS! SHE TOLD ME WE WOULD BE BILLIONAIRES! DON’T LET THEM TAKE ME TO QUANTICO!”`

I leaned over the microphone on the kitchen island:

“You left my four-year-old daughter to starve on a hardwood floor for seventy-two hours, Derek,” I whispered softly into the receiver:

“The temperature in an eight-by-ten subterranean cell at Fort Leavenworth is sixty-two degrees year-round.”

“Enjoy the cruise.”

*CLICK.*

I tapped the terminal, severing the link forever.

`23:45:12 EST.`

The living room in Chesapeake had been restored to operational silence.

The linen closet door remained open, but the forty-eight fiber-optic ports were dark. A specialized cyber-warfare team from Fort Meade had severed the exfiltration bridge, locking the server array inside a mobile Faraday container.

Lily was asleep in my arms.

She wore clean flannel pajamas, her breathing deep, steady, and untroubled, her small hand clutching the silver dog tags hanging around my neck.

Beside my chair on the floorboards, fast asleep with his heavy golden head resting across my combat boots, was Barnaby—an eighty-pound retired naval working dog, a Belgian Malinois that Admiral Mercer had brought to the staging area two hours ago.

On the dining table between my forearms…

Resting atop the blue vellum deed to Conduit Ten…

Was an antique, four-inch-long, solid-titanium surveyor’s compass transit key, machined with fifty-six analog cryptographic notches along its lower edge:

`KEY IDENTIFIER: MERCER-NOLAN-010`
`CLASSIFICATION: STRATEGIC SOVEREIGN ESCROW // TITLE 50 CONTINUITY`
`TITLE: CONDUIT TEN // THE CAPITAL COMMAND SPUR`

The heavy front door of my house clicked open softly on its hinges:

*CREEEAK.*

Stepping into the room, wearing his full service dress blue uniform bearing the four silver stars of the **Chief of Naval Operations**, his chest covered in ten rows of medals and ribbons including the Navy Cross and the Distinguished Service Medal…

Was **Vice Admiral David Mercer**.

Beside him walked **United States Attorney Marcus Cooper**.

The Admiral stopped at the edge of the dining table.

He did not look like an officer who had just captured a criminal family on a luxury cruise ship.

His flint-gray eyes were shadowed by an ancient, terrifying, un-survivable realization that had just been unsealed seventy feet beneath my linen closet floorboards:

“Hannah,” the Admiral said softly, setting a black calfskin portfolio bound with crimson wax onto the polished wood:

“Marcus.”

“What is it, Uncle David?” I asked, my fingers gently tracing the laser-cut serial number on the titanium key:

“Derek and Patricia are in federal transport chains aboard the USS *Gravely*. The server array has been seized. The sixty billion dollars in sovereign maritime escrows has been secured in Lily’s spendthrift trust. The house is cleared. The ledger is balanced.”

Vice Admiral David Mercer slowly, deliberately reached into the calfskin portfolio.

He pulled out an unsealed, forty-year-old **Classified Naval Intelligence Admiralty Flight Manifest** bound in black calfskin, stamped with the red wax seal of the **CHIEF OF NAVAL OPERATIONS // 1984**:

`SOVEREIGN OVERRIDE // CODE ARCHANGEL`
`ORIGIN: STRATEGIC COMMAND // SUBMARINE BASE KINGS BAY`
`RECIPIENT: SPECIAL MASTER ARTHUR MERCER SENIOR`
`MESSAGE: “ARTHUR. DEREK NOLAN WAS NOT AN INDEPENDENT SPECULATOR.”`
`”THE CHILD ABANDONMENT IN CHESAPEAKE WAS NOT A DOMESTIC BETRAYAL.”`
`”CONDUIT TEN BENEATH YOUR DAUGHTER’S LINEN CLOSET CONCEALS THE MASTER”`
`”ANALOG TARGETING RELEASE CIPHER ARTERY FOR THE ENTIRE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE”`
`”STRATEGIC BOMBER FLEET AT MINOT, BARKSDALE, AND WHITEMAN.”`
`”AND THE MAN WHO ORDERED DEREK TO LOCK THAT CLOSET AND STARVE YOUR GRANDDAUGHTER…”`
`”IS NOT SITTING IN A CARIBBEAN JAIL CELL.”`
`”HE IS CURRENTLY SITTING IN THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT.”`
