CHAPTER 3: THE SINKHOLE UNDER PARADISE VALLEY
The room seemed to drop through the bedrock.
Alistair’s eyes widened until the whites showed entirely around his blue irises. His breath hitched—a dry, spastic gasp that whistled through his nostrils:
*h-h-h.*
“How… how do you have that docket?” Alistair whispered. “That filing was sealed under Title Eighteen! The clerk swore it couldn’t be unsealed until Monday morning!”
“The clerk in Maricopa County,” Roman replied smoothly, adjusting his gold cufflinks, “was arrested thirty-five minutes ago by federal marshals in the parking lot of a steakhouse in Scottsdale.”
“He was carrying eighty thousand dollars in unmarked twenty-dollar bills inside a cardboard wine box.”
“He has already provided an eleven-page sworn proffer under Title Twenty-Eight.”
Roman tossed the leather docket onto Alistair’s chest:
*THUD.*
“You didn’t move Genevieve into this house six months ago because you were having an affair, Alistair.”
“You moved her into this house because your mother, Eleanor Vance, discovered something in the state land archives eleven months ago.”
Roman pointed his gold fountain pen straight at me:
“She discovered who Madeline really was.”
I stood on the bottom step of the staircase.
The air around me felt clear, sterile, stripped of nine years of domestic terror.
“My father,” I said softly, my voice barely carrying past the banister, “didn’t just build a global shipping empire, Alistair.”
“In nineteen-forty-four, during the expansion of the wartime strategic airfields across the Southwest, my grandfather, Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer-Pembroke, surveyed the subterranean bedrock beneath the Salt River Valley.”
“He bored a four-hundred-mile, pressurized, electromagnetic-shielded defense conduit connecting Luke Air Force Base directly into the retaliatory missile silos beneath the Arizona desert.”
“A facility known in military continuity charters as **Conduit Ten**.”
Silas Pembroke stepped forward, his heavy combat boots crushing the broken champagne flutes into fine white powder:
*crunch… tack… crunch.*
“Conduit Ten was deeded under a sovereign naval charter in nineteen-forty-four,” Silas stated, his voice flat as an iron beam:
“Fifty-one percent of the undivided fee-simple equity was vested in the female lineal descendants of Arthur Mercer-Pembroke in perpetuity.”
“In my sister.”
“And through her… in her eight-year-old daughter, Paisley.”
Silas pointed the muzzle of his MCX straight at the marble floor between Alistair’s knees:
“This house does not sit on four acres of suburban paradise, Alistair.”
“The foundations of your guest wing sit directly atop **Valve Station Ten**—the primary emergency hydraulic ventilation manifold and analog cryptographic command spur for the entire Southwestern defense sector.”
“Your family discovered the deed.”
“You knew that if Madeline died or was declared legally incompetent by an emergency probate court… and custody of Paisley was transferred to Genevieve under a private conservatorship…”
“The Vance family would hold the sovereign title to the most critical nuclear continuity redoubt in the Western United States.”
Silas bared his teeth in a cold, horrifying line of bone:
“You didn’t whip my niece over a sequined dress, you coward.”
“You whipped an eight-year-old child to provoke my sister into striking you on camera, so your corrupt deputies outside could arrest her for aggravated domestic battery before midnight.”
