My girls were happy.
They were safe.
They were loved.
That was all I had ever wanted.
Then, as the guests began taking their seats for the reception, I noticed a woman standing near the back.
She had gray streaks in her hair and a pale, tired face.
She wore a dark blue dress and held a small handbag against her chest.
Something about her seemed familiar.
Then she turned toward the light.
My heart stopped.
“Vanessa?”
My younger sister.
The woman who had disappeared twenty years earlier.
The woman who had left three newborn babies behind with a note telling me to do whatever I wanted.
She was standing at my daughters’ wedding.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
Then anger rushed through me so fiercely that my hands began shaking.
I walked toward her.
“What are you doing here?”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.
“Rick, please. Let me explain.”
“Explain what?”
I could barely keep my voice down.
“Where were you when they were babies? Where were you when they had their first birthdays? Where were you when they were sick, when they needed someone, when they asked me why their mother didn’t want them?”
Vanessa lowered her head.
“I know.”
“No. You don’t know.”
I looked at the three women standing across the room, laughing with their husbands.
“I raised them. I watched them grow up. I was there for every scraped knee, every nightmare, every broken heart.”
My voice cracked.
“And you weren’t there for any of it.”
She wiped her eyes.
“I know you hate me.”
I stared at her.
“I don’t know what I feel anymore.”
Before she could answer, someone called for the guests to gather near the stage.
The wedding party was about to make a toast.
I turned away from Vanessa, unable to bear looking at her any longer.
Then Ava stepped toward the microphone.
June and Claire stood beside her.
The three sisters looked at each other before Ava began speaking.
“Today is the happiest day of our lives. But before we celebrate our future, there’s someone we need to thank.”
She looked directly at me.
“Our father.”
The room filled with applause.
I felt tears gather in my eyes.
June took the microphone.
“He’s the man who raised us, encouraged us, and never once made us feel like we were a burden.”
Claire continued.
“He taught us that family isn’t just about who gives you life. It’s about who stays when life becomes difficult.”
I covered my mouth.
Then Ava turned toward Vanessa.
“And there is someone else we need to acknowledge.”
