And once in 1988 by a private investigator hired by Carol Anne Voss who drove all the way from Bingmpington to Mammoth Hot Springs in a rented Ford Fairmont and spent 2 days going through the original documents.
His name was Robert Ees and he was a former New York State police detective with 31 years of service, a wiry man in his late 50s who wore reading glasses on a retractable cord and who had, in his professional opinion, seen every category of missing person case the continent could produce.
He spent the second evening sitting in his car outside the administrative building with the folder on the passenger seat and the overhead light on, reading the incident report a final time.
Then he drove back to his motel and called Carol Anne Voss [music] and told her as gently as he could that there was nothing here that pointed anywhere specific.
