He Never Once Stayed for Dessert at My Mom’s — 72 Years Old and Dating a Much Younger Man, and We Never Questioned Why He Rushed Off. Until My Daughter Followed Him

PART 6

Daniel told us the story.

He and Evelyn had been married for thirty-four years.

They met in college.

Married young.

Never had children.

Built a quiet life.

He worked in financial consulting.

She taught elementary school.

Then, six years earlier, Evelyn began forgetting small things.

Keys.

Appointments.

Names.

The diagnosis came two years later.

Early-onset Alzheimer’s.

At first, Daniel cared for her at home.

He stopped traveling for work.

Changed his schedule.

Cooked.

Drove her to appointments.

Helped her dress.

Then Evelyn wandered outside one winter night.

Barefoot.

A neighbor found her two blocks away.

After that, her neurologist recommended specialized care.

Daniel resisted.

For months.

Then she fell down the stairs.

He finally agreed.

Willow Creek became her home.

He visited every evening.

Same time.

7:45.

Because routine helped her.

Mom stared at him.

“Every evening?”

He nodded.

“Almost.”

“Then why Sunday dinner?”

He looked ashamed.

“Because I wanted both.”

That sentence landed hard.

He wanted both.

A wife he still loved.

And a new life with my mother.

PART 7

Mom sat down.

“Did Evelyn know about me?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Can she understand enough to know?”

“Sometimes.”

“Does she still know you are her husband?”

His eyes filled.

“Some days.”

Mom looked away.

Sophie whispered.

“That’s why she smiled when she saw you.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Yes.”

Sophie’s mouth trembled.

“She called you Danny.”

He froze.

“Yes.”

“She hugged you.”

“Yes.”

“And you hugged her back.”

Daniel looked down.

“Yes.”

Mom closed her eyes.

I knew what she was seeing.

Every Sunday.

Daniel checking his watch.

Daniel kissing her goodbye.

Then driving to another woman.

Not a mistress.

His wife.

That somehow hurt differently.
