Panettiere’s connection to entertainment began remarkably early. Born on August 21, 1989, in Palisades, New York, she entered the entertainment industry as a small child and appeared in commercials before many children her age had even started school. Television soon followed, including work on the daytime dramas One Life to Live and Guiding Light. Playing Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light introduced Panettiere to the demanding schedule of television production while she was still growing up herself.
Her childhood therefore looked considerably different from that of most young people. School, friendships and ordinary childhood experiences existed alongside auditions, sets, scripts and professional responsibilities. By the time she reached adolescence, she already possessed years of experience in an industry in which many performers spend decades trying to establish themselves.

Her early career was not limited to television. At nine, Panettiere provided the voice of Dot in Pixar’s 1998 animated film A Bug’s Life. Two years later, she appeared in the football drama Remember the Titans, starring Denzel Washington. The film became one of the better-known projects of her early career and introduced her to an even broader audience. More television and film appearances followed, including Ally McBeal, Malcolm in the Middle, Tiger Cruise, Raising Helen and Ice Princess. These projects demonstrated that Panettiere was successfully making the difficult transition from child performer to teenage actress. She was increasingly recognizable, but the role that would transform her into an international television star was still ahead of her.
That transformation arrived in 2006 with NBC’s Heroes. Panettiere played Claire Bennet, a high-school cheerleader who discovers that she possesses extraordinary regenerative abilities. The character became central to the series and to its enormous early popularity. The phrase “Save the cheerleader, save the world” became closely associated with the show, and Panettiere became one of its most recognizable faces.
Heroes arrived at a moment when serialized television mysteries and superhero storytelling were attracting enormous mainstream attention. Panettiere’s performance allowed Claire to be more than simply a character with supernatural abilities. She portrayed a teenager attempting to understand her identity, family and place in a world that suddenly seemed much larger and more dangerous than she had imagined. The success of Heroes changed Panettiere’s public profile dramatically. She became a regular presence at awards ceremonies, premieres, interviews and entertainment events while still in her teens.
