Beard’s drumming was rarely about drawing attention away from the song. Instead, his strength came from providing the disciplined groove underneath Gibbons’ guitar playing and Hill’s bass lines. That rhythmic foundation became an important element of recordings such as “La Grange,” “Tush,” “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs.” His playing could sound deceptively simple, but its precision and feel were central to ZZ Top’s recognizable style. Beard ultimately appeared throughout the band’s studio-album catalog, helping connect its early blues-rock period with its later experiments involving electronic production and synthesizers.
ZZ Top achieved an important breakthrough during the 1970s, particularly with the 1973 album Tres Hombres. Songs such as “La Grange” helped introduce a much wider audience to the band’s Texas-influenced blues and boogie sound. During the years that followed, ZZ Top built a reputation as a formidable touring act while releasing records that expanded its audience. Beard remained behind the drum kit as the group moved from clubs and theaters to major venues, maintaining the rhythmic consistency that became one of its defining musical characteristics.

An even larger transformation arrived in the 1980s. With the release of Eliminator in 1983, ZZ Top successfully combined its blues-rock foundation with synthesizers, polished production and a modern visual identity. Songs including “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” “Sharp Dressed Man” and “Legs” became major hits, while memorable music videos received heavy exposure during the rise of MTV. Gibbons and Hill’s long beards, sunglasses and coordinated stage appearance became instantly recognizable, and Beard provided one of rock music’s enduring visual jokes: despite having the surname Beard, he was generally the member without the enormous beard associated with his two bandmates.
The success of that period introduced ZZ Top to listeners far beyond the traditional blues and hard-rock audience. Yet behind the videos, cars, costumes and humor was a band built around three musicians who had spent years learning how to play together. Beard’s ability to support songs without overwhelming them was an important part of that chemistry. The group eventually sold tens of millions of records worldwide and maintained a career stretching across generations, an unusually long run for a major rock band whose classic lineup remained together for roughly half a century.
Recognition for that career included ZZ Top’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2004. The honor formally placed Beard, Gibbons and Hill among the musicians whose work had made a lasting impact on rock music. By that point, their influence could be heard across blues rock, hard rock and Southern rock, while their visual identity had become part of popular culture. Beard remained an essential part of that legacy, even though his comparatively understated public personality often meant that Gibbons and Hill received more attention away from the stage.

The trio’s extraordinary continuity ended when Dusty Hill died in July 2021 at the age of 72. After Hill’s death, longtime guitar technician Elwood Francis took over bass duties, following Hill’s wishes that the group continue. Beard and Gibbons carried on under the ZZ Top name with Francis, preserving the music and touring tradition they had built over decades. Beard’s death now leaves Gibbons as the surviving member of the band’s celebrated classic trio.
In announcing Beard’s death, Gibbons emphasized both the personal and musical dimensions of the loss. He described Beard as a close friend, collaborator and naturally innovative drummer whose distinctive backbeat had been fundamental to ZZ Top’s sound. Gibbons also indicated that the band intends to continue performing, consistent with Beard’s wishes. Following his death, ZZ Top canceled two upcoming performances but was expected to resume its tour with scheduled shows in Austin, Texas.

Away from the spotlight, Beard generally maintained a more private public profile than the larger-than-life image associated with ZZ Top might suggest. His legacy, however, is preserved in decades of recordings and performances. From the earthy blues-rock of the band’s early years to the polished international hits of the MTV era and the later albums that followed, his drumming provided continuity through changing musical fashions. It was a style built less around unnecessary showmanship than around timing, feel and the ability to make a groove immediately recognizable.
