And then he said the thing I will be grateful for until I die:
“But she’s sixteen and she’s doing this on her own and somebody was going to have to be the adult who wouldn’t take the deal.”
Three men took the deal. I don’t blame a single one of them and I want to say that clearly, because when I’ve told this out loud people get angry at Ferris and Lowell and Casimir and it is completely misplaced.
They were shown a photograph of their own front door by a teenager and told to walk away quietly. Every one of them did exactly what a reasonable frightened person does.
Roan is the one who didn’t, and the only difference is that he’d known me for six years and knew Sorrel’s name before he met her.
Here’s what happened next, and it was slow and boring, which is how these things actually go.
I did not confront Barnaby. That was the first thing the police said and the second thing my solicitor said.
On Monday the ninth of March I went to Cranmoor station with the note, the folder from Sorrel’s laptop, and Sorrel, who came because she insisted and who I would not have brought otherwise.
The officer who took it was called Nkem Abara and she was very good and very fast, and the thing she said that made me cry in an interview room was: “This is one of the best-evidenced reports I’ve had this year, and it was put together by a fifteen-year-old.”
The phone went to digital forensics. The profile was there. The enrolment date was the twenty-second of December, 2021, and the account it reported to was one of his.
Lowell Bray gave a statement in April. Casimir Rusk gave one in May and handed over his phone. Ferris Ainge did not respond to anybody, which is his right.
Barnaby was arrested on the second of June, 2026, and charged with stalking involving serious alarm or distress, and with unauthorised access to computer material.
He pled not guilty in July, then changed it in November when the forensic report went in.
He was sentenced in January. Two years and eight months, a ten-year restraining order, and a prohibition on any device management or account access relating to either child until they are eighteen.
Sorrel gave a written statement. She did not have to go into a courtroom and she did not want to and nobody made her.
Now the part that is not finished.
My daughter did not do a brave thing. I want to be careful here because a lot of people have said “what a brave girl” to me and it makes something go tight in my chest.
She did a load-bearing thing. She held up a wall for two years that was never hers to hold.
She was fourteen when she found that profile and she made an adult calculation with a nine-year-old’s information, and she got it wrong, and the reason she got it wrong is that when she was nine years old a van burned on her uncle’s driveway forty minutes after her mother did the right thing.
I taught her that. Not on purpose. But I’m the one who was there.
We started seeing somebody in April. Dr Odalie Frank, Tuesdays, both of us and then separately.
The thing that came out in about the sixth session, which I did not expect at all, was that Sorrel wasn’t protecting me from Barnaby.
She was protecting me from finding out.
She told Dr Frank, in front of me, that after 2019 I “went funny” for about a year — her word — and that she remembers me not getting off the sofa, and that she decided at some point that her mother could not go through that again and could definitely not go through it while running a house.
She was managing my mental health at fourteen. That is what was actually happening.
I have had to sit with that.
Tibby found out in June. We told her together, with Dr Frank, in the smallest true version available for a ten-year-old, and she cried and then went and got her dog book and made Sorrel look at it with her for an hour, which is apparently what she does.
She has been fine, so far, in the way that ten-year-olds are fine until they’re seventeen.
Some smaller things.
Sorrel has a new phone and a new account and she set them both up herself and would not let me in the room, which the therapist says is exactly right and which I found completely unbearable for about a fortnight.
The shared calendar is gone. We use a whiteboard in the kitchen like it’s 1994 and honestly I prefer it.
I wrote to Casimir Rusk in June to thank him. He wrote back a very kind three paragraphs and we have not spoken since and that’s correct.
Lowell Bray sent me a message in April that said he had wanted to explain a hundred times and had been afraid to, and that he was sorry, and I told him he had nothing to apologise for and I meant it.
And Roan.
We are not together. I want to say that because it’s the tidy ending and it isn’t what happened.
He is my friend. He has been to two of Tibby’s things and he taught Sorrel to drive a manual in the Pellam car park on Sundays in the autumn, which was her idea, and Bramble the dog has been to our house eleven times.
Ask me again in two years.
The paper is in a drawer in my bedroom.
