“I don’t want to promise a child love I might not be ready to give,” she whispered. “I just want my baby to be
safe.”
For the first time, I listened without judging.
Then I embraced her.
“Forgive me, Emily. I was so worried about my grandchild that I forgot you’re my child too.”
She buried her face in my shoulder, and we cried together.
The following weeks changed our lives.
Emily continued treatment and counseling. Jamie received rehabilitation therapy, and Laura gradually recovered with medical support.
I began volunteering at the center, reading stories to Jamie and helping Laura prepare meals.
One afternoon, Jamie asked me:
“Margaret, Emily says I’m a strong boy.
Do you think so too?”
I smiled through tears.
“Sweetheart, you’re one of the bravest boys I’ve ever met.”
Two weeks later, Emily went into premature labor.
I stayed beside her throughout the delivery.
