I hurried around the building, found a side entrance, and stepped into a dimly lit hallway.
Suddenly, I heard Emily’s voice.
“Dr. Susan, please tell me Jamie will be able to walk!”
I approached the doorway.
Inside, a pale little boy with enormous blue eyes sat in a wheelchair. He looked about five years old.
Emily was kneeling in front of him, holding his hands.
“Jamie, remember my promise? I’m going to get you somewhere
safe.”
The boy looked frightened.
“And that bad man won’t come back?”
“No, sweetheart. I’ll do everything I can to protect you.”
I couldn’t stand it anymore.
“Emily! What’s going on? Who is this child?”
My daughter jumped up, her face turning white.
“Mom! You weren’t supposed to find us!”
“Tell me the truth! Does Daniel have something to do with this boy?”
Emily covered her face and began crying.
