You may have seen this challenge circulating on social media: a photo showing several babies accompanied by a question inviting internet users to “guess which one is the girl” based on appearance, personality traits or behavior.
Here’s the problem: you can’t — and that’s precisely the point.
đźš« Why this challenge is problematic
Although these posts often go viral and generate thousands of comments, they raise important questions:
1. The gender is not visible
Biological sex and gender identity are not the same thing.
You cannot determine a child’s gender identity just by looking at them.
Babies do not visibly express their gender identity; it develops over time.
2. This reinforces harmful stereotypes
These challenges are often based on assumptions such as:
“Girls are calmer/more discreet”
“Boys are more active”
“The girls are wearing pink” or “have longer hair”
But personality traits are not linked to gender. Any baby can be sweet, bold, curious, or shy, regardless of its sex.
3. It’s exclusive
Ignoring intersex people (born with variations in sex characteristics).
