Chapter 1: Two police officers suddenly walked onto the stage during my 12-year-old son’s school performance. h007

“The county sheriff is currently assisting federal marshals at your private residence on Blackthorn Ridgeway, Mr. Vance,” Lieutenant Bennett answered calmly, rising from his knee beside Caleb.

The veteran officer turned forty-five degrees, stepping to the edge of the stage. He did not raise his voice, yet the authority vibrating in his chest filled the rafters like rolling thunder:

“Three hours ago, forensic chemists from the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases unsealed the subterranean aquifer beneath the Mercer homestead. They discovered three pressurized titanium cylinders of **Agent CP-44**—an analog organophosphate neurotoxin manufactured exclusively by **The Valkyrie Trust** in Vaduz, Liechtenstein.”

Bennett pointed his white-gloved hand directly at Vance’s chest:

“You placed those cylinders inside David Mercer’s residential water line thirty-six months ago, Vance. You watched him deteriorate month after month, simulating a terminal biliary collapse, while your factoring attorneys filed fraudulent probate liens against his sovereign property!”

My breath hitched in my throat with a dry, concussive *click*.

*David’s illness.*

The endless nights in the intensive care unit. The yellowing of his skin. The unexplained tremors that had robbed his hands of the strength to play his beloved Gibson guitar. The doctors in the regional hospital had been completely baffled, running panel after panel, finally throwing their hands up and calling it an aggressive, idiopathic neurodegenerative cascade.

*They hadn’t failed to diagnose him.*

*They had been treating a slow-motion assassination.*

I stumbled into the center aisle, my heels clicking frantically against the gymnasium floor:

“David…?” I choked out, tears blinding my vision as I reached the edge of the stage: “Thomas… is this true? What is happening to my family?!”

Lieutenant Bennett looked down at me, his eyes dark with an ancient, solemn grief.

“Jennifer,” he said softly, stepping down the stairs to meet me: “David wanted to protect you and Caleb from the crossfire. For twelve years, under an extraordinary Title 50 counter-intelligence deployment designated **Code Archangel**, Commander David Arthur Mercer maintained the generational lineal watch over **Conduit Ten**.”

“Conduit Ten…?” I echoed, the words tasting like ash on my tongue.

“Eighty years ago, in nineteen-forty-four,” Bennett explained, his voice carrying across the silent rows of families: “Under Title 50 War Powers, David’s grandfather—**Chief Master Surveyor Arthur Mercer Senior**—was commissioned by the Department of the Navy to bore forty miles of subterranean pre-Cambrian crystalline schist beneath North America!”

“He built **Conduit Ten**.”
