Hand over the card, or my team cuts this fence.”
Garrett turned to me.
He didn’t look at the gun.
He didn’t look at the four security guards.
He caught my wrist, his rough, calloused fingers squeezing with an unshakeable, fierce authority:
“Come with me, Emily.
Now.”
“Garrett, they have weapons!”
“They have civilian security licenses, Emily,” Garrett whispered, dragging me toward the heavy iron bulkhead door built directly into the limestone rock face behind the pump house:
“They cannot breach this door.
Not with torches.
Not with dynamite.”
Garrett stepped to the massive, eight-inch-thick steel hatch set into the rock.
The door was painted faded industrial olive drab, pitted with eighty years of river damp, bearing a heavy, cast-brass rectangular plate welded to the steel:
`PROPERTY OF: THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF THE NAVY`
`FACILITY: CONDUIT TEN // VALVE STATION TEN (POTOMAC FALL LINE APERTURE)`
`WARNING: TOP SECRET // RESTRICTED ACCESS UNDER TITLE 50 WAR POWERS`
`AUTHORITY: CHIEF MASTER SURVEYOR ARTHUR MERCER SENIOR (1944)`
Garrett reached inside his chore coat, pulling out an antique, four-inch brass keyway crank.
He inserted the tool into the center synchronization cylinder, turning the handle three complete rotations to the right: *CLACK.
CLACK.
CLACK.*
The massive hydraulic deadbolts inside the rock face shot back with a deafening, pneumatic hiss:
*SHHH-CLANK.*
The eight-inch steel hatch swung inward on frictionless bronze bearings, revealing a circular, forty-foot tunnel constructed of pre-Cambrian crystalline schist blocks reinforced with hand-poured naval titanium plating.
It smelled of ozone, eighty-year-old cedar preservation oil, and the dry, pure chill of an un-violated mountain redoubt.
Garrett pulled me inside, grabbed the interior dog-lever, and threw his weight against the iron:
*SLAM.*
The four-inch titanium deadbolts shot home from the inside with an airtight, concussive report:
*CLACK.*
Outside, through the heavy speaker diaphragm of the armored intercom, Marcus Vance’s muffled voice erupted in high-register, hysterical fury:
*“MERCER!
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
YOU CANNOT ENTER THAT REDOUBT!
THE ENCRYPTION KEYS WILL TRIGGER AN AUTOMATED DEFENSE SUMMONS!”*
Garrett did not answer him.
He flipped an industrial toggle switch on the concrete wall.
A string of independent amber tritium lamps flickered to life down the length of the descending gangway, illuminating forty-eight massive titanium transit cylinders bolted to the bedrock in two perfect, symmetrical rows.
