Chapter 1: My thirteen-year-old son chose his wealthy h007

Came Captain Garrett Stone.

My executive chief of staff who had assisted in securing the Great Falls perimeter and Washington continuity perimeters fourteen months ago.

He wore clean work fatigues, carrying a newly polished mahogany shadow box containing Arthur Mercer Senior and Richard Cole’s original, hand-stitched geodetic survey notebooks and the corporate seal of the newly nationalized Atlantic intelligence transport division.

In his eyes burned the honest, untroubled devotion of an officer who had stood by his Commander through fourteen months of shadow watch.

Garrett walked straight to my chair, setting the shadow box on the chestnut table with a proud, confident click.

He leaned down, wrapping his arm around my shoulder, pressing his warm cheek against mine:

“Chancellor?”

Garrett whispered into the morning breeze:

“The airstrip is quiet.”

“The airport farewell was answered forever.”

“The estate is ours.”

“And Tyler is walking on the bluffs.”

Walking up from the cedar orchard along the ridge path, dressed in clean work denim and an unbuttoned flannel shirt, his broad shoulders carrying his grandfather’s restored brass surveying rods, his laughter ringing like bronze bells in the morning breeze…

Came fourteen-year-old **Tyler**.

My son.

Whole.

Standing tall in the open sunlight.

Tyler wore comfortable work clothes, his dark curls bouncing in the morning sun, his cheeks rosy with vibrant, blossoming health, his large hazel eyes dancing with an unyielding, beautiful, eternal joy.

In his small hands, he carried a freshly carved wooden locomotive that Garrett had whittled for him from a block of cedar.

And across the hairline above Tyler’s left ear, curving down toward his temple in an unmistakable crescent, was the dark wine-red vascular mark of his heritage: a port-wine stain shaped like half an antique surveying transit plumb.

The mark of Arthur Mercer Senior.

The mark of the bedrock.

Tyler walked straight to my chair, climbing into the seat beside mine, throwing his strong, loving arms around my neck, pressing his soft, warm cheek against mine:

“Mom!”
