Samuel paused.
“Someone had access to the hospital records.”
I focused on the screen.
DR. COLE?
“Possibly. We need his testimony.”
Samuel opened another document.
“There’s something else. The original toxicology laboratory has identified a second substance in your samples.”
I waited.
“It appears to have been administered alongside the first. The combination may explain why your symptoms were initially mistaken for a rare neurological disorder.”

I closed my eyes.
David had planned this carefully.
Samuel continued.
“Your condition may be reversible, although recovery will require intensive treatment.”
For the first time in months, I felt something other than fear.
Hope.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
“Samuel Reed.”
A voice spoke urgently.
Samuel stood.
“What?”
He listened.
Then his expression changed.
“Are you certain?”
A pause.
“Where?”
He ended the call.
I stared at him.
“What happened?”
Samuel looked at me.
“Emma has been found.”
