David stepped forward.
“Victoria, stop.”
She ignored him.
“Three years ago, David told me his first wife had died from a neurological illness. He said he had been left with debts and a complicated estate.”

Jessica stared at her.
“He told me Caroline was never his wife.”
Victoria gave a humorless smile.
“He told you that, too?”
She turned toward David.
“You have told so many versions of your life that I don’t think even you remember which one is real.”
The little girl moved closer to her mother.
Victoria gently touched her shoulder.
“This is Lily. She’s my daughter.”
David’s expression softened briefly.
“Lily, sweetheart…”
The child stepped behind Victoria.
“Don’t.”
One word.
But it stopped him.

Victoria continued.
“When I became pregnant, David insisted that we keep our relationship private. He said his business partners would misunderstand. He promised that once his sick wife died, everything would become official.”
