Chapter 1: My husband brought his mistress into our bedroom while I lay dying, then let her measure the windows for the curtains she planned to hang after my funeral. h6368

“Did he ever tell you what happened to his first wife?”

I selected NO.

“Of course not.”

She pushed the photograph toward me.

“Caroline didn’t die because of a mysterious disease.”

I stared at her.

Jessica’s expression hardened.

“She discovered something David had stolen from her.”

“What?” I managed to type.

Jessica leaned forward.

“Her company. Her patents. Her money.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Jessica continued.

“He married her for the same reason he married you. He wanted access to her wealth.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Then why are you helping him?”

Jessica looked down.

For the first time, I noticed that her hands were trembling.

“Because I thought I was going to be his wife.”

She swallowed.

“He promised me that after you died, we would marry. He promised me a new life.”

I typed another question.

WHAT CHANGED?

Jessica’s eyes filled with tears.

“He has another woman.”
