The man was retired and living outside Boston.

He had agreed to speak with Samuel the following morning.

More importantly, the investigator had discovered that Caroline’s estate had been settled unusually quickly.

David had received almost everything.

The only exception was a small trust established for Emma.

That trust had disappeared from the public records two years later.

Samuel placed a document on the table.

“Someone transferred the funds into an offshore structure.”

I focused on the screen.

WHO?

“The beneficiary is listed under a corporate nominee. We’re tracing the ownership.”

I typed.

COULD IT BE DAVID?

“Possibly.”

Samuel hesitated.

“But there’s something else.”

He opened another document.

It was an insurance policy.

Caroline had held a substantial life insurance policy.

David was the primary beneficiary.

The policy had been increased shortly before her death.

My throat tightened.

Samuel looked at me.

“Your husband has also increased the life insurance coverage on you.”
