“How is our patient?” she asked.

David laughed.

“About the same.”

Jessica placed her bag on the chair.

“Have you spoken to Adrian?”

“Last night.”

“And?”

“He says we need to be careful.”

Jessica frowned.

“Careful about what?”

David glanced toward the bed.

“Not here.”

She walked closer to me.

“She’s not going to understand anything.”

David gave her a warning look.

Jessica shrugged.

“Fine.”

She sat on the edge of the bed and examined my face.

“You know, I almost feel sorry for you.”

Her perfume was overpowering.

“I really do.”

She brushed a strand of hair away from my forehead.

“You built such a beautiful life. Such an enormous house. So many wonderful things.”

She smiled.

“And now you won’t get to enjoy any of it.”

David stood by the window.

“Jessica.”

“What?”

“Leave it.”

She turned toward him.

“You told me she wouldn’t be a problem.”

“She isn’t.”
