Chapter 1: My husband brought his mistress into our bedroom while I lay dying, then let her measure the windows for the curtains she planned to hang after my funeral. h6368

I looked at Samuel.

WHY IS HE WITH HER?

“We’re investigating.”

I selected another question.

DOES DAVID KNOW?

“I believe he does.”

Samuel closed the file.

“There’s something else you need to understand. David has been contacting financial institutions and asking about the documents you signed before your condition worsened.”

I remembered our conversations.

His insistence that I review my estate.

His sudden interest in my medical decisions.

His questions about whether I wanted to remain on life support if my condition became irreversible.

I typed.

HE WANTS ME DECLARED INCAPABLE.

Samuel nodded.

“He may be preparing to use a medical power of attorney.”

“But I never gave him that authority.”

“Not under your final documents. However, we found an older authorization that appears to carry your signature.”

My heart began racing.

I stared at the screen.

I NEVER SIGNED IT.

Samuel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s what I suspected.”

He opened the document.
