“Jessica, stop measuring for a moment.”

David’s voice pulled me back to the present.

“What?”

“I need to make a call.”

“To whom?”

“The attorney.”

Jessica’s expression changed.

“Samuel?”

“Yes.”

“Why are you still dealing with him? I thought you had everything arranged.”

David glanced toward my bed.

“Not everything.”

“David, you promised me this would be finished.”

“I know what I promised.”

She folded her arms.

“You told me the estate was settled.”

“It is.”

“Then what’s the problem?”

He lowered his voice.

“There’s a complication with the final paperwork.”

I concentrated on every word.

Jessica looked irritated.

“What complication?”

David glanced at me again.

“Not here.”

She sighed and put the measuring tape back into her purse.

“Fine. But I don’t want any surprises. I’ve waited long enough.”

David kissed her forehead.

“There won’t be any.”

They moved toward the door.

Just before leaving, Jessica turned around.

“One more thing.”
